A man has been given an indefinite hospital order after stabbing a man to death in his Butetown home.
Mujeeb Rahman Hassani, 40, from Butetown, was previously found guilty of the manslaughter of Ibrahim Yassin.
Police were called to Belmont Walk, Butetown, Cardiff, shortly after 9am on Sunday, February 18, 2024, to a report of a serious assault.
Mr Yassin, 64, had been attacked and suffered multiple stab wounds at his home in Belmont Walk.
Officers responded and Hassani was detained in nearby James Street.
He was charged with murder but during the trial at Cardiff Crown Court in August 2026, the jury were directed to formally find Hassani not guilty of murder.
The court heard the defendant was suffering with diminished responsibility at the time of the incident.
In a tribute, Mr Yassin’s family said: "Today, we stand before this court as a family deeply hurt by the loss of our beloved father, Ibrahim Yassin. He was more than a father to us; he was our source of love, guidance and strength.
"His life was taken from us in the most devastating way, leaving a void that can never truly be filled. We are left with precious memories, immeasurable grief and a pain that words cannot fully express.
"We ask that our father, Ibrahim Yassin, is remembered for the way he lived, the community he served, and the family he raised. We want his life to be remembered for the person he was, the lives he touched and the love he gave, rather than the circumstances in which he died.
"Nothing can bring our father back or undo the suffering our family has endured. But we hope that, through these proceedings, justice will be served and his memory honoured.
"We loved him, we miss him, and we will carry his memory in our hearts forever."
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Lamerton, from South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Mr Ibrahim Yassin was a devoted father to his 11 children and much respected in the Butetown community.
“His death understandably caused immense grief and distress to his family and the close-knit community of Butetown.
“We hope following today’s sentencing that the family will be able to feel some sense of closure and justice for the devastating loss of their father.
“They have acted with courage and dignity throughout the trial process, and my most sincere condolences remain with them. “
