Kian Bateman, of Caerau, Cardiff, was sentenced today (Friday, July 3) at Cardiff Crown Court for Shelley’s murder and grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to Shelley’s partner David Bratcher.

Bateman was found guilty following a trial in May 2026.

Emergency services were called to Heol Trelai just before 12.30am on Saturday September 27, 2025, to a report that the driver of a car had collided with pedestrians outside the 4th Glamorgan Home Guard Club.

Shelley Davies, 38, from Caerau, was seriously injured during the incident having been run over by the car, and despite critical care, sadly died at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

Her partner David Bratcher, 40, who was also seriously injured was treated at the same hospital.

Kian Bateman, of Caerau, Cardiff, admitted causing death and injury by dangerous driving, but denied the murder of Shelley Davies and the attempted murder of David Bratcher.

Following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court, 19-year-old Bateman was convicted of murder and grievous bodily harm with intent.

Bateman has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 17 years.

Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea from South Wales Police said:

“On September 27, 2025, Shelley Davies, a mum of three, went on a night out to watch live music at a local social club with her partner David Bratcher, but tragically never went home after suffering fatal injuries.

“The court found that Kian Bateman deliberately drove at Shelley and seriously injuring David.

“Shelley was loved dearly, and is greatly missed, by her family and friends. Our thoughts remain with them today as they have been throughout this horrendous ordeal.

“We would like to thank all the witnesses who assisted the investigation, the Caerau community, as well as the prosecution team.”

Sentencing Kian Bateman, Judge Mary Stacey commended the investigation team:

"I want to pay tribute to the first responders who attended at the scene and dealt so professionally with what they found there.

"They did what they could to make Mrs Davies comfortable and to treat her in difficult circumstances.

"This team of detectives approached this awful case with compassion and professionalism.

"I wish to thank all the police officers and civilian staff who investigated the case and for their detective work and watched and rewatched the CCTV footage that they were able to retrieve, so that this case could be brought to justice."
