Death of Ibrahim Yassin: Man convicted of manslaughter

Mujeeb Rahman Hassani from Butetown, has today (Thursday, August 13) been found guilty of the manslaughter of Ibrahim Yassin.

Police were called to Belmont Walk, Butetown, Cardiff, shortly after 9am on Sunday, February 18, 2024, to a report of a serious assault.

Mr Yassin, 64, had been attacked and suffered multiple stab wounds at his home in Belmont Walk.

Officers responded and Hassani, 40, was detained in nearby James Street.

He was charged with murder but during the trial at Cardiff Crown Court the jury were directed to formally find Hassani not guilty of murder.

The court heard the defendant was suffering with diminished responsibility at the time of the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Claire Lamerton, from South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Mr Ibrahim Yassin was a devoted father to his 11 children and much respected in the Butetown community.

“His death understandably caused immense grief and distress to his family and the close-knit community of Butetown.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they have been since his tragic death, and my most sincere condolences are with them.”

Hassani will remain in Ashworth Hospital until sentencing on October 16.
