REQUEST

I would like to request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act:

1. (a) The cost per year of boarding/kennelling services for prohibited unregistered dogs seized under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. (b) Please also include the number of dogs seized and the breeds, if that information is available. I would like this information for each of the last 5 years i.e:

1. Jan-Dec 2021
2. Jan-Dec 2022
3. Jan-Dec 2023
4. Jan-Dec 2024
5. Jan-June 2025

RESPONSE

Question 1a

We have consulted with our Specialist Operations Department who have provided the below response to this part of your request.

Please be advised, the figures provided relate to total cost for all seized dogs. Due to the way in which the information is held, our kennel costs are not broken down by breed or offences and therefore we’re unable to provide you with this detail.

Please also be aware, the above costs do not include vet costs.

The figures are held in financial year and not calendar year. We have therefore supplied you with the last five full financial years.

Question 1b

A search has been conducted for all occurrences where dogs have been recorded as seized between 1^st January 2020 to 3^rd June 2025 (the date of your request).

Please see the below table that provides the number of dogs seized broken down by calendar year:

Please be advised, the figures for 2020, 2021 and 2022 will appear lower as this information was not centrally recorded.

Please also find the attached document entitled ‘Response Data 792_25 Q1b’ in relation to the breakdown of breeds.

In relation to the dog breed, please be advised that this is a free text field and therefore, the dog breed is entered manually by officers and staff.

Where ‘u/k’, ‘uk’, ‘unknown’ and ‘(blank)’ is recorded under the ‘Dog Breed’ column, this means that the dog breed is unknown or not recorded.
