REQUEST

 

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please can you disclose the following information:

 

1. In the past year, how many car accidents took place? (Financial year 2024/25)

• Can this be broken down by accident causes such as speeding, drink-driving, icy roads etc? 
• Can this be broken down by town (accidents in the towns that the force covers)?

 

2. What is the number of pedestrian casualties in reported road collisions in the past year? (Financial year 2024/25) 

• Could these casualties be broken down into fatalities, serious injuries and minor injuries?
• Can this be broken down by town (accidents in the towns that the force covers)?

 

3. What is the number of pedal cyclist casualties in reported road collisions in the past year? (Financial year 2024/25)

• Could these casualties be broken down into fatalities, serious injuries and minor injuries?
• Can this be broken down by town (accidents in the towns that the force covers)?

 

4. In the past year, how many people were arrested following a traffic collision/accident and how many people were subsequently charged? (Financial year 2024/25)

 

RESPONSE

 

We have consulted with our Motoring Unit who have provided the below information to answer your request.

 

Question 1

 

For the financial year 2024/25, there were 767 road traffic collisions (RTCs) recorded involving cars.

 

Question 2

 

For the financial year 2024/25, there were 166 RTCs recorded involving pedestrian casualties.

 

Question 2a

 

Of those in question 2, please see the below breakdown by severity of the injuries:

 

Fatalities – 1

Serious injuries – 35

Minor injuries – 132

Question 3

 

For the financial year 2024/25, there were 106 RTCs recorded involving pedal cyclist casualties.

 

Question 3a

 

Unfortunately, due to the way in which the information is held on our crime and incident recording system (Niche RMS), we are unable to separate the driver/rider and therefore are unable to provide a breakdown of the severity of the injuries for pedal cyclists.

In relation to question 1a, an RTC may have more than one contributory factor recorded and therefore, the figures will appear higher.

 

Question 4

 

A search has been conducted for all arrests recorded between 1^st April 2024 and 31^st March 2025 retrieved from our crime and incident recording system (Niche RMS). Each of these occurrences have been cross-referenced with each of the RTC occurrences retrieved for questions 1 – 3.

 

This search retrieved the following results:

 

Arrests – 26

Charges – 7

 

Please be advised that this search has been conducted under the arrest date. The searches conducted for questions 1 – 3 have been conducted under the reported date and therefore have been retrieved using different methodologies. As the figures have been taken from two separate datasets, the figures provided in question 4 may be higher and therefore should not be considered accurate or official South Wales Police statistics.
