REQUEST

1. How many serving South Wales Police officers were arrested for rape in 2024?
2. Of the total number of serving SWP officers arrested for rape in 2024, how many were charged with the offence of rape?
3. Of the total number of serving SWP officers arrested for rape in 2024 and not subsequently charged, what were the reasons for the subsequent outcomes?
4. Is every South Wales Police officer, fully accredited to be the officer in charge of a case of rape, prior to being allocated a rape investigation?

RESPONSE

We consulted with our Professional Standards Department (PSD) who have provided the following information in relation to your request.

Question 1

Four serving officers have been arrested for rape.

Question 2

Zero. Two cases are still live.

Question 3

2 No Further Action. In both cases, the evidential test was not met.

Question 4

Yes, all officers are trained in scene crime management, victim care and golden hour investigation principles.

When an officer or member of police staff is suspected of committing a criminal offence, or is facing an allegation of gross misconduct, consideration is given as to whether it is appropriate for them to remain in their role.

In certain circumstances a decision may be made to suspend them from duty, pending the progression of any criminal or gross misconduct investigation. In all cases the necessity to suspend from duty is given careful consideration with suspension only being authorised when it is necessary to prevent compromise to the ongoing investigation or to ensure that public confidence and trust in the police service is maintained.

South Wales Police expects the highest standards of professional conduct from all members of staff and will not tolerate individuals who undermine the committed public service of their professional colleagues.
