ICT performs a number of functions that underpin core business across South Wales Police. ICT has responsibility for the organisation’s information, processing, storing, and delivering it to front line staff when and where it is required. The department underpins operational policing by providing a range of technical platforms.
The ICT Department is made up of four distinct sections: Service Delivery, Technical Delivery, Technical Programme Management and Technical Standards.
Service Delivery is responsible for providing service support and business services. It incorporates an ICT Service Desk providing first line support (with added responsibilities for Customer Relationship and ICT Communications). The Business Services team manages ICT contracts, procurement, financial management and ICT stores. Both teams work closely with users, customers and suppliers.
Technical Delivery oversees operational and day to-day functions, including the resolution of technical issues from second through to third line support. This section functions like a traditional enterprise scale ICT department and encompasses 14 distinct technical teams split between Platform & Infrastructure units. An example of some of those teams is Networks, Datacentre & Servers and Database Team.
The Technical Programme Management (TPM) section is a centralised function within the ICT department that specialises in managing projects, programmes, and business change to achieve strategic business goals and objectives that drive business transformation and growth.
The Technical Standards strand has the responsibility of overseeing the department’s strategy and compliance to standards including security and audit commitments as well as ensuring the delivery of our technical collaborative commitments. This section contains the ICT Security team as well as a bespoke team of architects and engineers working in development roles towards the wider departmental and organisational strategic vision.
“The reason I wanted to join South Wales Police was because I was looking for a stable, professional career where I could learn and grow my skills. I was also attracted to the benefits such as the Blue Light Discount, career progression opportunities and more.
“There really is potential to progress in your career when you work for the ICT team. I started my career off as a Service Desk Agent and have worked my way up to being a second line support engineer, within the Devices team. I’ve now been working in the department for 3 years and have gained so much experience and developed my knowledge, skills, and abilities. I’m looking forward to progressing my career further within the department, and with the encouragement from my managers, I know they’ll provide me with the support I need to take on more challenging projects and tasks, which will enable me to learn new skills to further my career within the world of ICT.
“Working in the ICT department benefits me in so many ways. It allows me to grow my skills, as I’m constantly exposed to new technologies. I get to work with a team of talented and dedicated professionals, and it makes me feel like I’m making a difference, as I know I’m making a positive impact on the future of ICT within South Wales Police.
