Pregnancy
Maternity
*You are entitled to have up to a maximum of 15 months maternity leave (taken in one or more periods of leave) regardless of service. Maternity leave can be taken no earlier than 6 months before the Expected Week of Childbirth (EWC) & finish no later than 12 months after the actual birth date, but within the maternity leave entitlement.
Paternity
You are eligible for paternity leave if you are an employee who is the child’s biological father, or the husband, wife, partner or civil partner of the mother or main adopter, may be entitled to paternity leave if they are responsible for the child’s upbringing and wishes to take time off work to provide support or care for the child/children.
Please note paternity leave cannot be taken before the child is born, placed with you or has entered the UK if adopting form abroad and must be taken in the 52 weeks after the birth or adoption of the child.
You must also be continuously employed by the same employer for at least 26 weeks by the end of the 15th week before the baby is due and continue to be employed until the date the baby is born.
When you join TeamSWP there are adoption policies and guidance which outline the important role played by line managers, setting out their responsibilities as well as explaining what you need to do from the day you notify us of your intention to adopt, right the way through to the day you return to work.
The guidance describes the notification procedures and timescales, the role of the Pregnancy and Adoption Champions, Pre Adoption Support Plan, the associated family friendly policies, Child Care Voucher Scheme, Keep in Touch days and the Post Adoption Plan to facilitate a supportive return to work.
We recognise the profound impact baby loss can have, and we are committed to supporting our staff and officers during what can be an incredibly difficult time.
We provide access to a range of internal and external support options, including counselling services, specialist support organisations, and support for partners.
South Wales Police also has a dedicated Baby Loss Peer Support Group. This confidential service is led by trained volunteer peer supporters who offer understanding, guidance and practical support to colleagues of any gender who have experienced baby loss, whether recently or in the past. The group also provides guidance for colleagues and line managers on how to offer sensitive, compassionate support and enable a supportive return to work.
