Selflessness, dedication, courage and innovation – just a few of the attributes celebrated last night as we held the #TeamSWP Awards 2024.
The annual awards, which were held this year at Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, shine a spotlight on the standout actions and work of officers, staff, volunteers and our partners during the past year.
Attendees at the event, which included loved ones of those nominated, and our sponsors, heard humbling and inspiring tales of those who have excelled in their field, or who have gone above and beyond for the communities we serve.
This year's winners, chosen by the Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan and Police and Crime Commissioner Emma Wools, are:
Bravery Award: Sergeant Holly Price and Constable Jordan Rockey, who risked their own safety to save a man who had doused himself in petrol and set himself alight.
Detective Constable Steven Davies
Community Award: Detective Constable Steven Davies who, after saving the life of a member of the public using a defibrillator, has dedicated his his time to improving access to defibs and fundraising more than £50,000 to maintain the life-saving equipment.
Sergeant Alison Robinson
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award: Sergeant Alison Robinson, who set up a peer support group for baby loss, directly contributing to the Chief Constable’s Delivery Plan of prioritising health and wellbeing, demonstrating supportive leadership, and prioritising inclusivity.
Special Sergeant Benjamin Johns
Extra Mile Award for Volunteers: Special Sergeant Benjamin Johns, who joined the Special Constabulary in 2015 and has been an instrumental member of the team, and an approachable and inspiring mentor to others, ever since. In 2023 alone, he volunteered 1,107 hours of his time to the communities of South Wales.
Constable Jonathan Abel
Impact Award: Constable Jonathan Abel, who was described as a "trailblazer" in his efforts to disrupt a group of youths causing misery in the local community, securing six Criminal Behaviour Orders and working with partners to ensure further intervention.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU)
DC Eleanor Dallas
Investigation of the Year Award: Joint winners – the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) and Detective Constable Eleanor Dallas. The SCIU were awarded for their tireless work in bringing to justice a driver who failed to stop after hitting a cyclist, causing the victim to have his leg amputated. DC Dallas, meanwhile, was named joint winner for her work in securing a 30-year prison sentence for a child abuser who had committed abuse against multiple victims for nearly half a century.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Bartholomew
Leadership Award: Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Bartholomew, who led the complex and far-reaching investigation into former police constable Lewis Edwards, who abused hundreds of children online. In addition to securing a delay to the trial to ensure the maximum number of victims could be acknowledged in the charges, the team have also reached out to various social media platforms to challenge them to better police their content.
Former police constable, Paul Union
Police Officer Lifetime Achievement Award: Former police constable, Paul Union, "a true street cop" who retired in June after 28 years on the frontline working with the communities of Grangetown.
Police Staff Lifetime Achievement Award: Colin Probert, ICT Network Specialist, who has been instrumental in delivering many complex projects which have improved communications capabilities within our organisation and for the communities that we serve.
Team Operation Wormit
Operation of the Year Award: Operation Wormit saw an Organised Crime Group responsible for conveying £1.4m-worth of prohibited items into UK prisons via drone, disrupted and brought before the courts.
Problem-solving in Partnership Award: Sergeant Jacob Rollnick and Mandy Flood from Trading Standards, who led their respective teams to investigate and dismantle a group who used several stores in Cardiff, Barry and Bridgend as a front for selling unlawful tobacco products and/or psychoactive substances. The group laundered money totalling £1.8m, which is thought to be one of the biggest cases of illegal tobacco smuggling in Wales.
