Today, the annual Service of Remembrance was held at police headquarters and was led by Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan and Police and Crime Commissioner Emma Wools, and officiated by the force chaplain, the Reverend Robert Coyne.
During the Service, wreaths were laid at our Police War Memorial in honour of those who have laid down their lives in service with our nation’s armed forces.
Flowers were also laid at our force’s Memorial Sundial in memory of the police officers and staff who have died in the line of duty.
Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan said:
“I stand here before you today to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.
“This is such a poignant occasion, and it is right that we continue to show our respect and gratitude for those who have fallen in service, not only here, but across the country. It is ceremonies such as this that bring together our communities, to show our humanity and to strengthen our cohesion in times of turmoil and unrest.
“Let us reflect not just on the cost of service, but also on the honour of it. The legacy of our fallen officers, military and indeed our colleagues across all emergency and public services, lives on in the work we do, the lives we touch, and the communities we protect. It is their bravery, their loyalty to service and their ultimate sacrifice that inspire us to keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges we face.
“They will never be forgotten.”
