A man has been handed a 13-year extended sentence after an unprovoked assault in which his then-partner sustained such serious facial injuries he tried to claim she'd been hit by a car.

Wayne Phillip Jenkins, 39, from Llanelli, is serving a 13-year extended sentence, comprising a custodial term of nine years with an extended period of 4 years, for a section 18 domestic violence assault against a 36-year-old woman.

In June 2022 officers attended an incident in Swansea where they located a woman who had sustained substantial facial injuries.

The attending officers noticed the unusual behaviour of Wayne Jenkins, who told officers that his partner had been run over by a car.

During the investigation, it transpired that Jenkins had subjected his then partner to a vicious and unprovoked attack.

The victim provided evidence at Swansea Crown Court where she detailed the assault which has left her with life-changing injuries. She described events after the assault had taken place, telling the jury how Wayne Jenkins had walked her through the streets and back lanes of Manselton, in an attempt to camouflage the injuries he had caused her. It was shortly after this that officers came across the her.

Wayne Jenkins denied having any responsibility for the injuries he had inflicted upon the victim, which resulted in her having to endure a trial as a consequence, in amongst undergoing numerous medical treatments and surgeries in hospital.

DS Sam Lewis of Swansea CID said:

"Wayne Jenkins is a very violent and dangerous offender and I am certain that Swansea will be a safer place now that he is behind bars."

The Officer Investigating the Case, DC Abi Doxsey added:

“The victim has shown a remarkable amount of courage and determination throughout the entire investigation and is an inspiration.

“It is hard to imagine the impact this incident has had on the victim and yet the courage she has shown throughout this ordeal has been extraordinary. She deserves full recognition for the bravery she has shown and continues to show."
