Our Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Licensing team conducted an operation on a number of pubs in the Briton Ferry area after recent intelligence suggested that underage people were frequently being served alcohol in some of these premises.
The operation, which was jointly co-ordinated with Neath Port Talbot Council’s licensing department, was also supported by special constables. When the team visited licensed premises within the area, a number of people under the age of 18 were found to be drinking inside one of the establishments - some of whom were intoxicated and confirmed that they had been served by bar staff without being challenged for identification.
These children were returned home by officers, where they were left in the care of their families.
Enquiries are still ongoing. Positive action will be taken against the licensed premises and the staff responsible. Among the four Licensing objectives is to protect children from harm - licensed premises and designated premises supervisors need to ensure they are upholding and meeting these objectives. By serving underage people, they are not only putting the safety and welfare of those children in jeopardy, but also risk criminal prosecution themselves.
Sergeant James Ponting said:
“These types of operations, including test purchasing operations, will be taking place across the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot area on a regular basis.
“We encourage anyone with any information or intelligence to support us in protecting children from licensed premises which do not follow the required legislation to get in touch via 101.”
