Treharris man jailed for Pentrebach hit and run

On Sunday March 17, 2024, officers were flagged down by a member of the public reporting that two people had been run over on Merthyr Road in Pentrebach.

The victims were walking towards Merthyr town centre when a grey Audi A3 also travelling in that direction, swerved onto the wrong side of the road, mounting the kerb, and hitting them both. One of the victims had a bleed on both lungs and broke two bones in their leg which required surgery.

Located on the pavement after the collision was a wing mirror cover and a detached mirror with an Audi logo on it. CCTV searches were conducted and found the Audi driving around Merthyr town centre with a smashed front windscreen.

This car was then linked to Lewis Morris, 27, from Treharris. Further CCTV footage captured the incident, showing both victims being flung into the air.

Officers located the Audi parked in a forecourt in Merthyr Tydfil. It had significant damage, including a smashed windscreen and a damaged driver’s side wing mirror.

On February 24, Morris appeared before Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

On Monday, April 14, he was sentenced to 34 months in prison and disqualified from driving for three years.

Rebecca Sutton, 32, from Merthyr Tydfil, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of public justice and was sentenced to six months in prison.

Roads Policing Officer Mack said:

“Amazingly both victims didn’t sustain any life changing injuries, but the incident was understandably very frightening for both.
“While we welcome the outcome at court, we acknowledge that both victims and their families continue to suffer emotional impact because of Morris’s reckless and dangerous actions.”
