Our commitment to tackling violence against women and girls

Today marks White Ribbon Day, a movement that asks men to take action to end men’s violence against women and girls (VAWG).

This year’s theme encourages men to hold themselves accountable to women, and to each other, to encourage positive behaviour change. You can make the White Ribbon promise here.

Tackling VAWG is a priority for us and means addressing crimes identified as being committed primarily but not exclusively by men against women.

These crimes include domestic abuse, rape, sexual offences, stalking, harassment, honour-based abuse including forced marriage, female genital mutilation, non-fatal strangulation or suffocation, child abuse, human trafficking focusing on sexual exploitation, prostitution and pornography.

Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughn said: “White Ribbon Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the pledge we make to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about male violence against women and girls. Tackling all forms of abuse and keeping people safe is, and always will be, a priority for SWP

“To the women and girls who have reported to us, we do not underestimate how difficult it can be to come forward and to share personal information, particularly when the abuse experienced often restricts freedom and breaks down self-esteem and confidence. To those who have yet to come forward, we can and want to help you.

If you are not able or ready to speak to the police, I encourage you to contact a support service like Live Fear Free which is available 24/7 to listen and offer guidance.”

“Our aim is that no woman or girl is ever a victim of violence or abuse, and that everyone feels safe in our communities, and we will continue to work together with partner agencies to achieve this.”
