Terrence John, 70, from Barry has been jailed after pleading guilty to attempted murder.
He appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, March 28 and was made the subject of a 12-year extended sentence.
The sentence includes nine years prison followed by a three-year extended licence period.
Police were called to Powis View in Barry on June 12, 2021 to reports of a woman being stabbed in the face and chest by a kitchen knife.
The victim had bravely fought off John, who was her ex-partner, and sought help from a neighbour.
John then stabbed himself a number of times in an attempt to take his own life.
The court heard that the victim continues to suffer with flashbacks and when she closes her eyes to sleep she has panic attacks of John stabbing her.
She was extremely brave and we sincerely hope that the outcome at court allows her to move on from this most traumatic ordeal and we wish her a full recovery.
