We are continuing a murder investigation following the death of a man in Cardiff city centre during the early hours of this morning.Officers were called at approximately 4.50am today (Sunday 21st July) to St Mary’s Street following reports of an assault.Although formal identification has not yet taken place, the victim is believed to be a 21-year-old man from Grangetown.Emergency services performed CPR at the scene until he was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he died.His family has been informed and are being supported by family liaison officers.Detective Superintendent Richard Jones, from South Wales Police : Heddlu De Cymru Major Crime Investigation Team, said: 💬 A young man has tragically lost his life early this morning and we are doing all we can to identify the person responsible.💬 CCTV shows a disturbance which starts in the street near McDonalds and moves towards the Oxfam store where the victim has collapsed having sustained a wound as a result of being stabbed.💬 Significant police enquiries are continuing in the area and we thank the local community, including businesses and visitors, for its understanding while a number of cordons remain in place.Witnesses have described the suspect making-off initially in the direction of Wood Street, and then towards Penarth Road at the rear of Cardiff Central Railway station.Anyone who may have seen the incident, the suspect or has any other information is urged to please contact South Wales Police.Information and digital footage can be submitted online via a public portal mipp.police.uk/operation/62SWP19A91-PO1Alternatively, please contact us via 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting occurrence 1900265784. ... It's so sad to hear of another young life snuffed out by knife crime. I always felt safe when I was young in Cardiff centre at night. My heartfelt sympathy go out to this young man's family.

I grew up in Cardiff and felt very safe going out in town to the bars, clubs etc. Feeling quite worried that my 3 boys are growing up in a very different city😢
