Investigative Training Department

The Investigative Training Unit within South Wales Police has a proud history of providing investigative training courses both internally and to other external organisations and agencies.

We currently provide training for National Resources Wales, The Royal Navy, The British Army, the Welsh Ambulance Service, the Fire Service, TATA Steel, Health and Care Inspectorate Wales, Trading Standards, Scambusters UK and many other partner agencies.

We design and develop bespoke training courses to the needs of the individual organisation, these include PIP 2 interview courses to bespoke vulnerability, cyber, serious and complex investigative training. With a mix of guest speakers and subject matter experts the courses are facilitated by our experienced trainers with the use of the Hydra system. Additionally, we design any supporting operational documentation as required. Our training staff have extensive operational experience in the field of investigation and interviewing.

We also offer the option of accommodation at the Vale of Glamorgan hotel at a reduced rate for the duration of the course.

National SIO Development Programme 

  • The course is the first phase of the National SIO Development Programme, built around a hydra based scenario
  • To develop the skills of officers appointed as a Senior Investigative Officer, to enable the professional and effective management and co-ordination of investigations in accordance with National Occupational Standards and professionalising the investigation programme (PIP level 3).
  • Successful completion of this course will count towards gaining a PIP Level 3 Accreditation and you will be eligible to register for our 5 day National SIO Murder Week
  • Price: £3575 with accommodation, £2075 without accommodation. Duration: 3 weeks

National SIO Murder Week

  • This is the follow up to the SIO development programme and takes students through all aspects of a murder case scenario.
  • Price: £1325 with accommodation, £825 without accommodation. Duration: 5 days

Child Death Investigation

  • The course is designed to enable Senior Officers to respond properly and effectively to instances of sudden childhood death in accordance with national and local protocols.
  • Provides Senior Detectives and Senior Investigating Officers with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to enable them to effectively respond to incidents of childhood death, thereby improving their ability to determine whether a crime might have been committed, and to provide an effective foundation for any potential homicide investigation.
  • Price: £1325 with accommodation, £825 without accommodation. Duration: 5 days

PIP 2 Witness Interview

  • The training complies with the NPCC Investigative Interviewing Strategy and National Occupational Standards. The aim of this training is to provide investigators with the knowledge to interview witnesses in relation to Serious and Complex Crime.
  • Students will also be given knowledge, understanding and skills in dealing with vulnerable witness under Section 16 & 17 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 and significant witnesses.
  • You must complete the PIP 2 Witness Interview course before you are eligible to apply for the PIP 2 Suspect Interview Course.
  • Upon successful completion of this course the student will be a qualified Pip 2 Witness Interviewer. These courses are also a requisite as part of the PIP Level 2 Accreditation.

PIP 2 Suspect Interview

  • Students will be provided with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to interview suspects in relation to Serious and Complex Crime and deal with vulnerable suspects.
  • You can apply for the PIP 2 Suspect Interview course once you have completed the PIP 2 Witness Interview course.
  • Upon successful completion of this course the student will be a qualified Pip 2 Suspect Interviewer, this course is a requisite as part of the PIP Level 2 Accreditation.

Sexual Offences First Responder (SOFR)

  • This course is designed for Officers who will be required to perform the role of First Response Officer to allegations of sexual assaults. This course is compatible with the NPCC Guidance on Investigating Serious Sexual Offences and the HMCPSI report ‘Without Consent’ – the review of the Investigation and Prosecution of Rape.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills of Officers to provide a consistent and appropriate standard of service when carrying out the initial response to allegations of Sexual Assaults.
  • Upon successful completion of this Course, you will be qualified as a Sexual Offences First Responder.
  • Upon successful completion of this Course you will be eligible to register for a Sexual Offences Investigation Trained course (previously known as SOLO 3), if applicable to your role. (Police Constables and Detective Constables, who are required to perform the specific role of a Sexual Offences First Responder)

Sexual Offences Investigation Trained (SOIT)

  • This course is run in accordance with the National Strategy for Training the Investigation of Sexual Offences.
  • It will provide officers with additional interview skills and techniques necessary to provide the highest quality of victim care and to ensure the optimum standard of evidence retrieval when investigating sexual offences.
  • The course will provide officers with a clear understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry out the role of a Sexual Offences Investigation Trained Officer.
  • Students must have completed a Sexual Offences First Responder (SOFR) Course and a PIP 2 Witness Course within the last 5 years.
  • Police Constables and Detective Constables who are required to perform the specific role of a Sexual Offences Liaison Officer. They must possess the personal motivation and sensitivity to investigate sexual offences and be an experienced Witness Interviewer.
  • Price: £1325 with accommodation, £895 without accommodation. Duration: 5 days

Management of Sexual Offenders & Violent Offenders (MOSOVO)

  • To provide Public Protection Unit practitioners with the skills and knowledge to enable them to identify and manage sex offenders, violent offenders and other dangerous offenders falling within the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
  • Display an understanding of the Multi-Agency Protection Arrangements and the Standard Operating Procedure
  • Identify how to manage the risks associated with working in a Public Protection Unit
  • Explain offending cycles and types of sex offenders
  • Demonstrate how to apply notification criteria to offenders in accordance with the Sexual Offences Act 2003
  • Identify how to apply relevant criminal law, civil law and policy when considering disclosure to partner agencies, third parties or the media
  • Display an understanding of the criteria and method of applying for Civil Orders within Part 2 of the SOA 2003
  • Define mental health issues in relation to risk assessment and management of MAPPA offenders
  • Explain the work of the Public Protection Unit, Hi-Tec Crime Unit, Child Abuse Investigation Teams, Prison Service and Probation Service, and how they work together within MAPPA

Child Foundation

  • This course is aimed at HUB and Response Officers to enable them to identify and interview child witnesses and victims of low level and volume crime offences in order to comply with legislation and achieve best evidence for the criminal justice system.
  • The course is a mix of theory and practice of interviewing and provides training to officers to enable them to effectively interview children for volume crime offences in accordance with the law and best practice whilst recognise their obligations under the Victims Code of Practice.
  • Upon successful completion of this course you will be a qualified Vulnerable Child Interviewer and you will be eligible to register for a 15 day Specialist Child Abuse Investigators Development Programme (SCAIDP) Incorporating Child Interview, if applicable to your role.

Specialist Child Abuse Investigators Development Programme (SCAIDP) Incorporating Child Interview

  • This course provides the investigators with specialist skills in investigating serious offences against children and allows students to work towards professional registration as a specialist child abuse investigator and includes level 2 specialist interviewing of children.
  •  Upon successful completion of this course, you will be a qualified Advanced Child Witness Interviewer. Upon completion of your workplace portfolio thereafter, you will be a qualified National Specialist Child Abuse Investigator.

Vulnerable Adult Foundation

  • This  course is aimed at HUB and response officers to enable them to identify and interview vulnerable adult witnesses and victims of low level and volume crime offences in order to comply with legislation and achieve best evidence for the criminal justice system.
  • The course is a mix of theory and practice of interviewing and provides training to officers to enable them to effectively interview vulnerable adults for volume crime offences in accordance with the law and best practice whilst recognise their obligations under the Victims Code of Practice.
  • Upon successful completion of this course you will be a qualified Vulnerable Adult Interviewer and you will be eligible to register for a 15 day Specialist Adult Abuse Investigators Development Programme, if applicable to your role.

Serious Adult Abuse Investigators Development Programme (SAAIDP) Incorporating Adult Interview

  • This course provides the investigators with specialist skills in investigating serious offences against vulnerable adults/adults at risk.
  • Students will be provided with knowledge, understanding and practical skills to enable them to conduct witness interviews with vulnerable adults. Upon successful completion of this course you will be a qualified Serious Adult Abuse Investigator.
  • Price: £3575 with accommodation, £2075 without accommodation. Duration: 3 weeks

Mainstream Cyber Crime

  • As technology and communication impacts on many investigations, this course is suitable for officers and police staff in an investigative role only. It is designed to enable learners to investigate crime using new and traditional techniques. The course will provide training in open source intelligence to level 2.
