For several months police officers and staff from Barry police station and staff from Cardiff Airport have been collecting non perishable foods, items of clothing and small gifts for distribution to soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
Such as been the success of the initiative a second bundle of parcels is now heading its way to Kabul and onward to the British military bases in Afghanistan. Barry Neighbourhood Police Constable Gareth Holmes originally started the collection among his colleagues in Barry police station to put together small parcels of useful gifts to send out to troops serving in Afghanistan.
At the same time, Lisa Morgan and her colleague Marion Williams, who both work at Cardiff Airport, decided to join in with the initiative and start a collection among their fellow members of staff.
This week the second delivery of shoe-box sized parcels was despatched to troops serving on the front line. More than 120 parcels have now been sent to forces serving in Afghanistan.
PC Holmes said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support we have received for this both here in Barry police station as well as at the Airport. We have taken advice on the type of things that most of the troops appreciate and what is possible to send out to them.
“These range from pot noodles to socks and books to playing cards. We have already been able to fill more than 120 boxes which will be very welcome by the troops in Afghanistan.
“I would like to thank a number of local businesses including Shoe Zone on Holton Road and Park Crescent Post office for their valuable support as well as everyone at Barry police station and at the Airport including Nuance and the air traffic controllers at NATS who have supported us so far and we are already collecting for our next delivery.”
