About us

The SWP Dog Section opened its doors on the 23rd August 1960, after the arrival of four German Shepherds and a team of fledging handlers. Since then, our Dog Training School has gone on to become one of the most respected and influential institutions in the UK.

As part of the Operational Support Division, the Dog Section provides help and reinforcement for police officers across the South Wales region. With thanks to years of dedicated training, the SWP Dog School has helped to establish the dog as a vital member of the policing team. Working together with their handlers and divisional officers, the dogs ensure that South Wales remains safe.

"A modern day Police Dog Section needs to be able to tackle its current challenges and threats in a robust and dynamic manner.  Our present unit is experienced and equipped to track persons and property in a huge variety of emergency situations.  Situations where we can help vary from: Locating vulnerable missing persons; locating criminals who’ve recently committed burglaries, auto crime offences or violent crime and tackling persons in possession of firearms or otherwise so dangerous.

Our canine capacity has never been so utilised or in demand.  With ever growing development, this certainly looks set to continue and develop into the future."
