Operation Payback

Operation Payback

Through the Proceeds of Crime Act, criminals can now be stripped of their earnings and possessions gained through a criminal lifestyle – even if they are not convicted of the committed crime.

Joint operations between South Wales Police, the Wales Regional Asset Recovery Team, Gwent Police, Dyfed Powys Police and many other agencies aim to make a significant contribution to reducing crime and delivering justice by punishing those who profit from the misery of others.

This includes making asset recovery through confiscation and forfeiture a key part of criminal investigation, disrupting those involved in money laundering, referring suitable cases to the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), and utilising all financial intelligence.

Any confiscated cash will be used to fund further recovery work to stop more criminals cashing in on others misfortune.

Money will also be allocated to ‘Community Cashback’, a fund which gives communities a say in how criminal assets could be spent locally.

Take the Cash out of Crime
Operation Payback asks members of the public to report information relating to people who make a profit from criminal activity. The appeal aims to raise awareness that it’s not only drug dealers who cash in on crime, but other criminals too.

For example:

  • Those who burgle our homes
  • Those who steal our cars
  • Those who commit frauds against us
  • Those who commit street robberies
  • Those selling counterfeit goods
  • Those who handle stolen goods
  • Those selling cigarettes and alcohol smuggled in from abroad

Don’t let criminals live the high life at our expense. If you or someone you know has suspicions about a member of the public living off proceeds of crime, please report it by dialling 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
