Female Firearms Officer at training sessions

Joint Firearms Unit

We have firearms officers based across the Force, who are on duty 24/7 to keep you safe.

Like other officers, they deal with a number of crimes such as burglaries and road traffic collisions, but are specially trained to deal with incidents involving firearms.

For the most part, reports about firearms being carried in public turn out to be BB guns, but they look so realistic it’s difficult to tell the difference.

If our Public Service Centre receives a call from a member of public reporting a possible sighting of a suspected gun, our firearms officers will always respond, as a precaution to keep the public safe.

Specialised firearms officers who are trained in areas such as VIP protection and hostage release also form part of the team.

You might spot Gwent and Dyfed Powys firearms officers patrolling in your area. This is because we have a joint firearms unit to share expertise, boost resources and save money on training and equipment.
