Charging for Police Services

South Wales Police is permitted to charge for the policing of certain events, including football matches, visits by VIPs, custody use, commercial events, charitable events, community events, statutory events and private functions.

We use national guidance to charge for the policing of events, which is designed to stop taxpayers picking up the bill for the cost of overtime and extra staffing that may be required.

Requests for police resources are dealt with on a case by case basis, with consideration given to what kind of event it is, how many officers we will need to police it, whether additional officers need to be brought on shift that day, or work overtime.

Small scale events below a threshold level can be policed without charge.

All police forces in England and Wales follow the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) guidance.
